Pedestrian crossings for Cambridge
18 February 2016
Waipa District Council is promising two new pedestrian crossings for Cambridge.
Group manager service delivery Barry Bergin has confirmed one crossing will be installed over Victoria St near Williams St. The crossing will require pedestrians to push a button, activating a red light and forcing vehicles to stop.
A second, raised crossing but without lights will be installed on Victoria St East, also near Williams St. Measures will also be taken to help slow traffic on that road.
Bergin said the crossings, costing around $120,000, would be welcomed by people in the community who had been advocating for them for some time.
There's been concern expressed by people who are seeing kids cross both roads to and from school. Those concerns have been exacerbated because of increased traffic along Victoria Road as a result of the Waikato Expressway; that's really brought it to a head.
He said the council was working with NZTA to get the work done as soon as possible and would be pushing to have both crossings in place within the next few months.
