Rates confirmed for next year
28 June 2016
Waipa District Council has confirmed its rates rise next year will be less than originally projected.
Average annual rates increases for 2016/17 were confirmed at 2.14 per cent today, less than the 3.2 per cent originally outlined in year two of the Council's 10-Year Plan. Around 70 per cent of Waipa properties will see rates increases of less than two per cent.
The drop is largely because of minor delays to some capital works and a larger than expected cash surplus of $650,000. This surplus was used to offset the rates. The other major change was a $10 million reduction in debt levels.
Mayor Jim Mylchreest said very little change had been proposed to what was outlined in the 10-Year Plan. Around 760 people had used the online calculator to find out exactly how much their rates would be, he said.
Council received 27 submissions. As a result of those submissions, $10,000 had been set aside for archaeological site investigations in Cambridge north, a further $5,000 was set aside for parks and $10,000 was set aside to help support commemorative community events.
