Register this week and be in to win
24 June 2019
More than 35 per cent of dog owners in Waipā have registered their dogs before 30 June - the cut-off date to win free registration for life.
Since registrations opened at the beginning of this month, 3077 proactive owners have completed registration leaving 5485 owners needing to do the same.
Environmental services team leader, Karl Tutty said while the number of owners registering early was encouraging, many owners still needed to get onto it.
Part of being a good dog owner is registering your dog each year. It allows us to keep track of the dogs in our area and gives us insight into important figures such as the number of dogs that are neutered or live in fenced properties, and look at the future demand for services, equipment and facilities
Tutty said offering free registration - a prize worth more than $1000 for healthy young dogs - was a great way of encouraging dog owners to register their furry friends early.
There are also two additional prize packs up for grabs via Waipa District Council's Facebook competition where participants are encouraged to post a photo of their dog wearing their new yellow tag to be in to win.
First prize includes a dog bed, dog bowl, poo bags and a dog collar while second prize includes GoodNoze dog food, a dog bowl, dog collar and poo bags. Winners will be drawn on 5 July.
All dogs in New Zealand are required by law to be registered by three months of age to comply with the Dog Control Act 1996. Adult dogs must be registered within 14 days of new ownership.
Tutty said the fees help fund council's 24-hour dog control service, contribute towards administration costs and allowed for the maintenance of pound facilities and exercise areas.
In Waipā, the fee to register urban-based dogs is $90, reduced to $65 if dogs are neutered and kept in a fenced section. Rural dogs cost $50 each to register as they generally have less access to Council services.
You can register your dog online at waipadc.govt.nz/dogs or pop into Council offices and register in person. The new tags for 2019/20 are yellow replacing the green tags of 2018/19.
Owners have until 31 July to register their dogs or face a 50 per cent penalty fee added to their registration fee from 1 August.
