Road renaming delayed
9 March 2015
Feedback from residents has prompted Waipa district councillors to call for more discussion on the renaming of Hannon and Forrest Roads.
In November the Council advised that three roads - Hannon Road, Forrest Road and Watkins Road - would need new names because they would be severed by the Waikato Expressway. Emergency services are pushing for the renaming to avoid confusion in case of an emergency.
Originally, it was decided to rename the northern ends of each road as they contained fewer properties.
However, some of those living on the northern ends of Hannon and Forrest Roads have suggested it is the southern ends which should be renamed.
Their comments have prompted the council to ask residents at the southern end of Forest and Hannon Roads for their views. Letters were sent to residents this week asking for feedback by the end of this month.
The plan to rename the northern end of Watkins Road remains unchanged.
The council has been advised that adding the words North' or South' to the three affected roads would not meet national standards and would be rejected by Land Information New Zealand.
A decision on new road names for all three roads will be made by elected councillors in early May.
