A Christmas celebration planned for Te Awamutu will also be a chance for locals to meet Waipa's sporting champions face-to-face.
Carols by Candle Light will be held at the Albert Park stadium in Te Awamutu on Friday, December 12. The alcohol-free community event is being run by a local trust with support from the Waipa District Council and a group of volunteers. The event has secured $15,000 in funding support from Waipa's 150th Commemoration Fund as well as a small grant from Creative NZ.
Local groups committed to supporting the event so far include Te Awamutu's volunteer fire brigade, St John's, the local Rotary Club and the Te Awamutu Cadets. Supporting businesses include Pak n' Save and Aggreko. Former Miss New Zealand Vicki-Lee Wihonga will host the event that is expected to run from 6pm to 10pm.
Already five choirs, including the award-winning Rivertones, have been secured for the event along with Waipa's successful country duo Cooper's Run and the Te Awamutu Brass Band.
Olympic champion and five-times world champion rower Mahe Drysdale has already confirmed his attendance and other local sporting heroes will also be there.
Waipa residents are being urged to pack a picnic, bring the family and enjoy an evening of carols and entertainment.
