Speed decision deferred
25 June 2019
A decision on whether or not to change speed limits in Waipā district has been deferred.
At today's meeting, Council resolved to take additional time to consider more than 200 proposed changes to speed limits on Waipā roads. The changes, which would require changes to Council's existing Speed Limits Bylaw, have been proposed to make local roads safer.
Proposed changes include 40km/h areas in both Te Awamutu and Cambridge town centres, more 50 and 60km/h zones in urban areas, more than 60 and 80km/h zones in rural areas and lower speed limits near schools.
Speeds limits on State Highways in the district are set by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA).
Today some elected members said they wanted more time to fully consider the issues raised by 578 submitters, including the NZ Police and the NZTA.
The issue is likely to be revisited again at a Council Committee meeting in August.
