Stream vegetation clearance scheduled
20 May 2016
Work will begin next week to strengthen Te Awamutu's connection to the Mangaohoi Stream and to make the Pioneer Walk safer.
Much of the self-seeded vegetation along part of the stream will be removed, allowing key specimen trees to flourish and thrive. A number of mature trees will also be removed but the two memorial trees, and their plaques, will remain.
The work will open up the walkway, make it safer and will also allow planning work to begin for an expansion of the existing playground.
Barry Bergin, group manager service delivery said the clearance work would encourage more people to use and enjoy the area.
With the library set to open before the end of the year, the recent announcement about cycleways and the street upgrading work that's begun, it's an exciting time for Te Awamutu.
Work to clear the vegetation is likely to take place over a period of weeks and the walkway will be closed during this time. Occasionally the playground will also be off-limits for safety reasons.
Bergin said the vegetation clearance meant work could also begin on early planning for a wider playground and recreation space in this area. Council would be talking to the community about options in the next couple of months, he said.
The development around the Pioneer Walk is part of the wider Te Awamutu Hub project identified in the Te Awamutu Town concept plan. The Hub will be anchored by the new library which is set to open later this year, increased recreation space and the new museum site.
