Local waste minimisation experts are hitting local markets this month to give the Waipā community the chance to take a spin with a wheelie bin.
Late last year, Waipa District Council confirmed its new kerbside recycling contract will see recycling crates replaced by two purpose-built wheelie bins for each household: a 140-litre bin for glass bottles and jars (collected monthly) and a 240-litre bin for plastic, tins, cans, paper and cardboard (collected fortnightly). The new service kicks off from 1 July.
Council's waste minimisation officer Sally Fraser said the markets let people who might be curious or concerned give the wheelie bins a test drive and ask any questions about the new service.
We've filled our sample wheelie bins with the average recycling for Waipā. For example, the mixed recycling wheelie bin has two weeks' worth of paper, card, plastics, tins and cans. The glass one has four weeks of glass bottles and jars.
We want people to have a chance to move them around, feel the weight and see how they feel full of recycling, she said.
There will also be games to test recycling knowledge and spot prizes to be won.
Council's waste minimisation team will be at the following markets this month, get along and say hello:
Saturday 13 April - Te Awamutu Car Boot Market
Sunday 14 April - Cambridge Trash and Treasure Market
Sunday 28 April - Pirongia Craft Market
