Theatres win big in funding round
3 March 2015Waipa's theatres have been big winners in recent allocations from Waipa District Council's heritage fund.
The $70,000 fund helps manage historic buildings and protect and restore significant natural, cultural and archaeological sites within the district.
In its latest funding round, Council's heritage committee allocated the biggest grant, $20,000, to the Te Awamutu Little Theatre for remedial electrical work, the replacement of rotten boards and exterior painting. Te Awamutu's iconic Regent Theatre was given $750 to help fix a 1930s neon sign and Cambridge's Gaslight Theatre secured $6,000 to help replace doors.
Waipa's natural heritage was boosted by five grants totalling $22,000. Committee members allocated $8,000 to install silt traps at the Smyth property adjacent to Lake Ngaroto, $7,000 towards native plants for restoration planting at Lake Maratoto; $2,000 towards plants for the Mangaotama Wetland; $500 towards weed control on the Waikato River and $4,500 to purchase and install predator traps at Lake Rotopataka.
Other funding went to churches including $3,000 for work on Christ Church in Kihikihi, more than $1,600 for work on St Paul's Church in Te Awamutu; and $3,000 towards earthquake strengthening at the Presbyterian Church in Kihikihi.
Of the 17 applications for funding received in this round, 11 were supported to some extent.
Funding can be used to help pay for specialist advice but cannot be used for the creation of new monuments, oneoff events or the design, build or renovation of historic replicas.
