The future of Maungatautari
10 February 2016
Together with Ngāti Koroki Kahukura, Waipa District Council is reviewing the Maungatautari Reserve Management Plan (RMP) that will guide the future management of Maungatautari Scenic Reserve.
Council is asking everyone to share their vision for Maungatautari by filling out a quick form at www.waipadc.govt.nz/maungatautari
Community facilities manager Tony Roxburgh said Maungatautari has long been a treasured reserve in Waipa.
Maungatautari Reserve is home to pristine native forest and some of our most endangered plants, insects, birds, fish, even bats and frogs. We are blessed to have it as part of Waipa and we need to make sure we plan well for its future.
The new plan will prioritise everything for the next 10 years and guide the reserves day-to-day management.
To develop a plan we need to know if people in the community are happy with how the reserve currently operates or if they have other ideas.
New ideas could consider:
- landscape and scenery
- access and infrastructure
- cultural and historical values
- recreation and activities
- uses and activities.
Roxburgh said the community interest in, and relationship people have with the mountain was key to the review.
In 2014 the Crown and Ngāti Koroki Kahukura agreed to vest ownership of the reserve to the Maungatautari community. This has forged an even stronger connection with the reserve and a dedication to protecting its future.
The Maungatautari community, including local iwi, iwi with a customary interest, residents and landowners are Te Hapori O Maungatautari.
More information including the current RMP is available at www.waipadc.govt.nz/Maungatautari
Your feedback will guide the preparation and direction of the draft RMP that will go out for wider public consultation later in 2016. Feedback closes 1 March 2016.
