Tulip trees on way
11 August 2016
Te Awamutu's five remaining main street cherry trees will be removed this weekend and replaced with two tulip trees.
The cherry trees on the Arawata Street end of Alexandra Street are creating a traffic hazard as they hang too low and obstruct motorists' views. Some trees have been hit by trucks and some local business owners have said the spring blossom flowers create a mess.
Last year Waipa District Council responded to safety concerns and removed eight cherry trees in Alexandra Street also replacing them with tulip trees. Tulip trees have been chosen for their tall, straight form which won't obstruct views. The trees will eventually grow taller than the existing trees and will be planted clear of pedestrian crossings and street lights.
Depending on weather, the trees will be removed on Sunday night (Sunday, August 14) with the two new tulip trees in place by morning.
