Unregistered hairdresser convicted and fined
18 January 2011
A Te Awamutu hairdresser who operated unregistered for more than a year was convicted before Christmas in the Te Awamutu District Court.
The salon owner was prosecuted by Waipa District Council for a breach of the Health (Hairdressers) Regulations 1980 which requires hairdressers to be annually registered and makes it an offence to operate while unregistered.
The Court heard that the business had been operating unregistered since July 2009, despite a number of attempts by Waipa District Council to encourage compliance.
The owner pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined just over $1600. The annual fee for registering a hairdressing salon is $123.
The business is now registered.
A number of regulations require a range of businesses to be registered by local councils including hairdressers, camping grounds, mortuaries and premises selling food to the public.
Waipa District Council is aware of a further seven premises which are currently unregistered and operating in the district and expects to be commencing legal action in the near future.
