Vandals cause Waipuke Park closure
30 November 2018
Vandals have severely damaged machinery on Council's worksite at Lake Karāpiro's Waipuke Park overnight.
Waipa District Council contractors Splice Construction arrived onsite this morning to find stones in the engine, radiator and fuel tank of their roller.
The damage was caused at the entrance to Waipuke Park where Splice Construction are sealing the road to the popular lake and playground area.
Council's roading manager Bryan Hudson said the vandalism was mindless and extremely disappointing.
The damage caused to the machinery is extensive and costly to repair. This project will improve the experience of visitors to the lake and a setback like this will mean delays.
Hudson said access to Waipuke Park would now be closed to the public when contractor staff are not on site until work is complete.
We regret having to take this step, but the work will be completed in a few weeks time and normal access can then resume. We've never seen anything like this before and will be working with police to find the culprits.
Hudson encourages anyone who has any information about the damage to contact the Police.
