Waipa drop fees
25 November 2014
Waipa District Council is proposing to drop the fees it charges developers.
The fees, known as development contributions, are paid by developers to councils. They contribute towards infrastructure like roading and water projects which are driven by growth and that councils must fund on behalf of their communities.
The fees ensure that developers pay a share of growth-related project costs. The rest is paid by ratepayers.
Waipa is proposing a decrease in fees for developments in the majority of the district, except in Cambridge North. The new fees reflect the big spending projects for the district being considered for the next 10 years.
The draft policy also proposes a decrease in development contribution fees for commercial, industrial and retail developments to help support economic growth in the district.
Cambridge North, when a large amount of specific growth-related projects are planned, will see a proposed increase in development contributions.
Developers and others are being encouraged to look at the draft policy and provide feedback by January 23 before it is formalised and considered alongside the draft 10-year plan.
All councils are required by the Government to have a new draft development contributions policy available to the public by December 1 2014. But the new policy will not come into effect until 30 June 2015.
Detail around the new fees will be available online from 1 December. Meetings with developers are planned.
