Waipā events secure Council support
29 June 2018
Waipa District Council has allocated nearly $100,000 to 27 events aimed at driving economic activity and supporting Waipā's growing events reputation.
Members of the District Promotion Fund Committee earmaked $97,500 in funding from the District Promotion Fund on Wednesday. Close to $239,000 was requested from 48 applicants including from 14 new events seeking to become established in the district.
The largest allocations went to the UCI Track Cycling World Cup event at the Avantidrome in January 2019 and the Waka Ama sprint nationals to be held at Lake Karāpiro in January 2019 with both events allocated $10,000 each. A fireworks family night at Lake Karāpiro to be held in November next year received $8,000, Maadi Cup rowing received $6,000 and Balloons Visit Waikato was allocated $5,600.
The Kihikihi International Horse Trial, NZ Polo International Day and Pirongia Craft Day each received $5,000 each. (See table below for all allocations). The Committee held $2,500 over for ad hoc requests.
The District Promotion Fund has sat at $100,000 for a number of years but was increased during the recent 10-Year Plan process. From 2018/19, Council has budgeted $150,000 each year to support key events in the district. A new $30,000 Community Fund was also established to support smaller scale events which build and celebrate community pride.
District Promotion Fund Committee members are Mayor Jim Mylchreest, Councillors Clare St Pierre, Susan O'Regan, Sue Milner and Liz Stolwyk plus community representatives Mervyn Gyde and Kevin Burgess.
