Te Awamutu's Pop n' Good Bike Park opening party hosted by Waipā District Council in February last year has won a national award.
The community event was judged Best Local Government event in the prestigious New Zealand Event Association awards in Auckland last night. It was up against Hutt City's Carnival of Lights, the Light up Bike Spectacle in Whanganui, Paint the Town Ed in Dunedin, Sort It Careers Expo in Manawatu and Snow in the Park in Auckland.
The opening party in Te Awamutu attracted thousands of people, including 1,000 young children on bikes celebrating the opening of the much anticipated playground.
Waipā District Council staff organised the event and close to 30 Council staff volunteered to help on the day. Other community groups were also involved.
Waipā chief executive Garry Dyet said that Council and the park's major sponsors Donna and Paul Davies were thrilled to have the event recognised and were extremely proud of the facility.
The event organisation was led by Council's event and marketing advisor Amber Diprose.
