Waipa's building boom reaches record levels
22 January 2016
Waipa's building boom continued last year with Waipa District Council issuing record building consents valued at more than $213 million.
In 2015, 1157 consent were issued; the most since 2008 and of the highest ever value.
Waipa District Council's planning and regulatory manager Wayne Allan says the numbers reflect a record-breaking year for Waipa district.
It has been a huge year for my team and for Waipa district as we continue to see more and more people wanting to build and develop in Waipa. When we compare the stats to last year and the years prior, we're seeing an increase in growth across the board.
The number of consents issued for new dwellings was the second highest number on record.
Of the 1157 consents issued 442 were for new homes, an increase of 16.3 per cent from 2014.
Over the 12 month period, 484 building consents were issued in Cambridge, 260 for new homes. Te Awamutu/Kihikihi had 283 consents issued, 96 for new homes.
For the remainder of the district, Pirongia had 189 consents issued, Maungatautari 123 and Kakepuku 78.
We've seen record numbers throughout the year and there's no sign it's about to slow down. Given growth projections for Waipa, we anticipate this level of activity continuing for some time.
A number of high profile resource consent applications are currently in different stages of the approval process. They include:
- 28 and 42 lot subdivisions in Cambridge North.
- A mixed use development in Cambridge including residential apartments, visitor accommodation, retail, medical centre, office space, cafes, restaurants and take away food outlets.
- An 80 lot subdivision in Te Awamutu.
- A service station in Hautapu which has been approved.
Catering for growth was a key factor for Council in the 10-year-plan process. Over the next decade more than $120 million will be spent on upgrading water infrastructure and more than $274 million on Waipa's roads and footpaths.
It's a busy time for Waipa district and we're excited about what this growth means for our towns, businesses and the future of our communities.
