Dog registrations now open in Waipā
Fancy winning free registration for life for your furry friend? Dog registrations are now due and for those who get in quick, the chance to win big.
All dog owners who register their dogs before June 30, 2020 will be automatically entered into the draw for the prize - worth more than $1000 for a healthy, young pup.
Waipā District Council compliance manager Karl Tutty urged owners to get in quick and not leave registration until the last minute.
“From August 1, the legislation adds a 50 per cent penalty to any unpaid registration fees so it pays to register as soon as possible.”
Last year, more than 8720 dog were registered in Waipā, of which 7875 were micro-chipped (herding dogs and some elderly pet dogs are exempt).
“The numbers of dog registrations in Waipā has grown significantly each year which is great because it gives us the means to maintain and improve dog parks, erect signage and fund public education initiatives,” Tutty said.
Fees also help fund Council’s 24-hour animal control service and allow for the maintenance of pound facilities.
In Waipā, the fee to register urban-based dogs is $90, reduced to $65 if dogs are neutered and kept in a fenced section. Rural dogs cost $52 to register as they generally have less access to Council services.
Tutty encouraged any owners who were struggling to pay registration fees to contact Council to discuss payment options.
“We understand this has been a very hard time for many Waipā residents. If you are struggling financially as a result of Covid-19, please give us a call and we can work something out. The sooner we hear from you the better.”
All dogs in New Zealand are legally required to be registered by three months of age to comply with the Dog Control Act 1996. Adult dogs must be registered within 14 days of new ownership.
Owners can register their dogs online at waipadc.govt.nz/dogs or at the Cambridge or Te Awamutu Council offices once they have reopened to the public. Registrations can also be made over the phone on 0800 924 723.
