Waipa District Council seeking candidates

Do you want to help shape the future of Waipā and make important decisions for the community? Nominations for local government elections are opening soon.
On 19 July, candidates can put their names forward to run for local government. To assist interested members of the community, Council will be holding a candidate information evening at 6pm, 27 June 2019 at the Sir Don Rowlands Centre, Mighty River Domain.
Chief executive Garry Dyet said the evening was for all people interested in learning what was involved in being an elected member and campaigning for office.
He said Waipā was in an exciting period of growth and needed capable and driven candidates with strong leadership qualities and a passion for the community.
We are encouraging anyone who wants to make a difference in the local community to stand. After all, local government and local democracy are fundamental to our community and provide the opportunity for everyone's voice to be heard. The mayor and councillors are elected to be community leaders and to represent the views and interests of all citizens.
In addition to giving citizens a say in how their communities are run, Waipa District Council has community assets worth more than $1.6 billion. This includes the local road, water and waste water networks, libraries, recreation and community facilities. Council has an expected annual plan turnover for 2019/20 of an excess of $127 million in capital expenditure and operating costs around $87 million.

Candidate nominations run from 19 July to 16 August 2019. From 20 to 25 September, Waipā residents will receive their enrol to vote papers in the mail ahead of election day on 12 October. It is important to enrol so you can have your say on the future of Waipā.
