Young champions commended

Waipa's amazing young people were recognised for their champion efforts at last night's Waipa Youth Awards.
The Awards, organised by Waipa District Council, are in their 14th year and were hosted by Te Awamutu College. The Awards celebrate the achievements of young people in academics, arts and culture, community service, leadership, sport and multi-achiever categories. Open to students aged 14 - 18 who live, or have attended school, in the Waipa district.
2016 saw 102 nominations received.
Mayor Jim Mylchreest said each year the students represent some amazing achievements.
"Council are proud to run the awards and have these students be recognised for the positive impact they are having on our home of champions".
This year's excellence recipients were:
- Academics: Samuel Frengley, St Peter's School
- Arts & Culture: Jacob Gisby, St Peter's School
- Community Service: Emilie Hughes, St Peter's School
- Leadership: Megan Hemming, Cambridge High School
- Multi Achiever: Katie Foulkes, Te Awamutu College
- Sport: Nikita Howarth and Carl Jones, Cambridge High School
The Awards are supported by our champion community with Kihikihi, Te Awamutu and Cambridge Rotary Clubs, CMYK, Cambridge Lions, Business Networking International and Storey Sport coming on board to ensure the Awards can happen each year.

Excellence Recipients achievements breakdown
Academics: Samuel Frengley, St Peter's School for outstanding achievements in Chemistry, Calculus, Statistics, Biology and Physics, joint Dux and selected into NZ's Chemistry Olympiad team as a reserve, joint Dux and Excellence endorsed for NCEA Level 3.
Arts & Culture: Jacob Gisby, St Peter's School for distinction in Advanced 1 at the Royal Academy of Dance, placed 3rd in the Waitakere Competition for the Los Angeles Ballet Scholarship, Awarded the John Logan Scholarship at the Auckland Caledonian Competitions, was the youngest competitor in 2015 and a finalist in the Grand Awards and Competed in the Youth America Grand Prix of Dance in Seattl, offered a place at the New York Intensive, Indiana Conservatoire of Ballet Summer School and the Russian Bolshoi Summer School.
Community Service: Emilie Hughes, St Peter's School for organisation of St Peter's Relay for Life team, youth leader volunteer at holiday camp for refugee children, volunteer for Waikato Hospice and fundraising for Habitat for Humanity.
Leadership: Megan Hemming, Cambridge High School for head girl, school Dux, student support group leader for a Cambodian orphanage, recent recipient of the Terry Sullivan Cup for Leadership and School Spirit.
Multi Achiever: Katie Foulkes, Te Awamutu Collegefor receiving the RSA Peace Scholarship for Contribution, Service and Leadership, NCEA level 3 Excellence endorsed, recently received the AG Freeman Medal for Dux Literatum and received the Year 13 general Excellence Cup - Academic, Sport, Culture, Participation and Service.
Sport (two): Nikita Howarth, Cambridge High School for winning gold in S7 50 Fly at Para World Swimming Championships in Glasgow, Gold in SM7 200 IM at the Para World Swimming Championships in Glasgow, Ending the year ranked No 1 in both the SM7 200 IM and the S7 50 Fly and having 6 or her 7 races ranked in the Top 10 in the World at the end of 2015.
Carl Jones, Cambridge High School for winning gold and World Championship Title at the World Bowhunter Championships, setting six New Zealand records, becoming the NZFAA National Champion and being ranked no. 1 in NZ.
