Increased parking enforcement in lead-up to Christmas
Drivers who ignore time restrictions on parking spaces in Te Awamutu and Cambridge town centres may find themselves facing fines of up to $57.
Waipā District Council is ramping up parking enforcement efforts to ensure drivers adhere to time restrictions on parking spaces over the busiest time of the year.
Senior enforcement officer Ken Danby said the move would help to ensure drivers had equal opportunity to use prime parking spaces on Cambridge and Te Awamutu’s main streets.
“The Christmas period is one of the busiest times of year in our town centres and it is really important for everyone to have an opportunity to use time restricted parking spaces. It is also important for retailers to have parking options available for their customers.”
Danby said fines would vary depending on how long drivers had exceeded time restrictions.
Historically, there had been an increase in complaints to Council in December and January about drivers parking outside businesses all day in restricted parking spaces.
“It is not fair when people park in a timerestricted parking space all day and prevent anyone else from being able to use it,” Danby said.
“There are plenty of other parks on the outskirts of the town centres which have no time restrictions and are a short walk to the CBD.”
