Road resurfacing around Waipā

Resurfacing our roads keeps them waterproof, protects the integrity, and helps make sure our roads have a safe level of skid resistance. Over time, the stone wears away and the road can become slippery, so resealing restores skid resistance.

Resealing also protects and extends the life of the underlying pavement, as well as seals small cracks and imperfections, helps to prevent hydroplaning and rejuvenates old road surfaces.

It’s ideal to resurface a road before it begins to break down, so the road surface may look as if it’s still in good condition before resealing begins.

On average council seals about 80km of road per year, which is mostly chip seal, and some asphalt on busy urban streets.

There are two types of commonly used surface treatments:

• Chip Sealing: - is the process of spraying bitumen onto a road pavement and then rolling in a layer of uniformly sized stones to create a new surface.
• Asphalt Paving Surface: – is a very durable surface material made up of a mixture of distilled petroleum known as asphalt cement and aggregate which is mixed together in a mixing chamber called a pugmill. While it is still hot, the asphalt paving mixture is spread onto the old road surface by a paving machine and compacted by heavy rollers to produce a smooth black surface.
