NZ Transport Agency will begin major road resurfacing works on State Highway 1 between Cambridge and Tamahere from Sunday, March 1.
The works will be carried out in six stages and are expected to continue through to late 2026.
Stage five
From Monday July 20, travelling south on SH1 from Hamilton won't be able to exit the Expressway via the northern end of Cambridge Road (Cambridge West/Velodrome) while NZTA completes the next stage of resurfacing works.
Detours in place:
Traffic travelling south from Hamilton to Cambridge:
Continue south on SH1 and exit at the Victoria Road Interchange, Hautapu
Tamahere Interchange:
The interchange remains open, however expect increased congestion, particularly during peak travel times, as SH1 traffic merges to one lane in each direction south of Tamahere.
Stage four
From Monday 15 June to mid-July (weather dependent), traffic heading north on SH1 towards Hamilton will not be able to exit at Victoria Road Interchange, Hautapu while resurfacing works continue.
Detours in place:
- Traffic travelling to Cambridge northbound from Karāpiro: Exit at the Southern Interchange (Tīrau Road, past the Cambridge Golf Club)
Northbound traffic leaving Cambridge, you can either:
- Exit via the Northern Interchange (Cambridge West) and use Cambridge Road/Hamilton Road to access SH1 northbound.
- Exit via SH1B/SH26 and back to SH1 at Hamilton
Stage three
NZTA are starting stage three on Sunday, May 17, with work moving north between the Victoria Road interchange at Hautapu and Northern Cambridge interchange.
To complete this safely, the southbound on and off ramps at the Victoria Road, Hautapu interchange will be closed.
A detour will be in place for southbound traffic leaving Cambridge from Hautapu. Southbound traffic on the expressway can access Cambridge by exiting at the Northern interchange and using Cambridge Road/Hamilton Road.
Motorists should expect delays and congestion, particularly at the:
- Victoria Road/Cambridge Road roundabout beside St Andrews Church
- Albert Street/Achillies Street intersection
- Shakespeare Street/Tīrau Road intersection.
Stage three is expected to be completed by early July.
Stage two
Work will move to the southbound lanes between Tirau Road and Victoria Road. There will be no impact to on or off-ramps during this stage.
