Walking and Horse Riding
Sainsbury Forest is a commercial forest owned and operated by Council, and leased by Pirongia Mountain Bike Club.
The forest roads and tracks are open to horse riding, walkers, and dog walking however, dogs must remain on leash at all times. Hunting and motorbikes are prohibited.
Mountain Bike Club tracks are prohibited for horse riding or walking.
New signage will be installed shortly to ensure everyone entering Sainsbury Forest is aware of the risks associated with accessing a commercial forest.
Horse riders are also welcome at Sainsbury Reserve nearby.
During harvest periods, the forest is closed to all users.
Mountain Bike Riding
Mountain bike tracks are open to the public for mountain bike riding. The Sainsbury Road mountain bike tracks have been developed by the Pirongia Mountain Bike Club. Around 8 kilometres of track have been built near the forestry road which climbs the mountain from the end of Sainsbury Road.
