Stock crossings are managed within the requirements of the Public Places Bylaw 2018. This sets out conditions for operating stock crossing places on roads. Crossings must be operated safely and roads kept clean of excessive mud or effluent. The bylaw is available on this website.
We promote the installation of stock underpasses in the Waipā District and encourage their use. We may even contribute to the cost of upgrading an existing crossing to an underpass on busier roads within the district.
A stock underpass may be required where an existing or proposed stock crossing is deemed to be a safety hazard, creates unacceptable environmental impacts or adversely affects the efficiency of the road network and no reasonable alternative is available. Our Transportation team can provide advice on underpass requirements and the lease mechanism used to protect all parties interests.
